How Israel uses settler-soldier terror to colonise the West Bank

Recent cycles of violence in the West Bank follow a recognisable pattern that extends beyond spontaneous settler aggression. The latest episode was triggered by a confrontation in the village of Tal in the northern West Bank, where Israeli settlers encountered Palestinian residents, resulting in two settler deaths. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced expanded military operations targeting what officials characterised as "terrorist hotbeds," while Defence Minister Israel Katz framed settlement expansion as a strategic security priority.

Analysis of these developments reveals a structured approach to territorial control rather than reactive measures. The distinction between Israeli military personnel and armed settlers has narrowed considerably over the past five years, with both groups functioning within an integrated strategy. The operational sequence typically begins with military incursions that damage Palestinian infrastructure, detain residents, and conduct lethal operations. Settler movements then intensify into affected areas, followed by administrative actions that formalise territorial reconfiguration.

The city of Jenin exemplifies this pattern. Following Israeli military operations including "Operation Iron Wall" in 2025, three new Israeli settlements have begun construction near the city, with additional projects underway in Tulkarem. The Israeli government and security apparatus provide protection to settlers, while settler organisations simultaneously lobby for the acquittal of soldiers accused of violence against Palestinians.

Characterising these actions solely as "settler violence" obscures the systematic nature of the process. The coordination between military, settler, and administrative arms of the Israeli state indicates a deliberate colonisation strategy applied to occupied Palestinian territory, rather than lawless individual conduct operating outside state structures.
